 Castello
di Tornano is located at 5 Km from Gaiole in Chianti, near Siena,
on a hillside amid woods and vineyards, in the southern part of the
Chianti region. Gaiole in Chianti has been a market town since 1200
and now is a central destinantion for touring southern Chianti. The
area around it is dotted with castles; perched on hilltops (the better
to see the approaching enemy), they were of great strategic importance
during the Renaissance. Today it just means that the views are always
dazzling.

By car from Florence:
the fastest way is through the A1 highway. Take direction Rome
and exit at "Valdarno". Then proceed in direction
"Gaiole in Chianti-Siena" on the s.s.408 road. Pass
beyond Gaiole in Chianti and after about 19 km you will find
the sign for Castello di Tornano. Otherwise, from Florence you
can follow the panoramic road s.s.222 "Chiantigiana"
until Gaiole in Chianti and from there follow the above instructions.
By car from Rome: take the A1 highway
direction Florence and exit at "Valdichiana". Then
proceed in direction "Castelnuovo Berardenga", first
on the motorway towards Siena and then on the s.s.484 road.
Pass beyond Castelnuovo Berardenga and arrive at the intersection
with the s.s.408. Turn left in direction Siena and after a few
kilometres you will find the sign for Castello di Tornano.
By car from Pisa: take the motorway FI-PI-LI
in direction Florence. Once arrived in Florence follow the above
instructions. |

Badia a Coltibono
- Address: 4 km north of Gaiole in Chianti. Closed: Monday.
Just outside the abbey walls is Badia a Coltibuono's pleased
restaurant, with seating outside or in soft-yellow rooms divided
by ancient brick arches. |
La Grotta della Rana - Address: Località
San Sano, off SS408. Closed Wed. and Feb to Mar, 15th.
A perfect stop for lunch while you're exploring Chianti's wineries,
this trattoria features cucina casalinga (home cooking) on a
lovely outdoor patio (there is also indoor seating). If you
time it right, you might get to watch a memorable sunset while
you're eating. Service is gracious and prompt, making this place
a real treat. |
